|
I am an Associate Professor of Religion at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa. I teach courses in Biblical Studies, Islam, and Science and Religion and hold a Ph.D. in Religious Studies from Temple University. My current research is focused on finding ways for Christians and Muslims to move beyond their differences and work together for a better world. I have followed up my book "Was Jesus a Muslim?" with a new book "Radically Open: Transcending Religious Identity in an Age of Anxiety" which should be released during the fall of 2012. Further down the line I hope to publish a book "Jesus and Jihad": Reclaiming the Prophetic Heart of Christianity and Islam.

Jesus was a Muslim, claims U.S. religions professor
Religions professor at the Luther College in Iowa, Robert F. Shedinger, has made a controversial claim in a new book, arguing that Jesus Christ was a Muslim.
In the beginning of his book, to be released this year, Shedinger asked “Was Jesus a Muslim?"
“I will answer with a very qualified yes,” he wrote.
In the spring of 2001, Shedinger’s methodology of teaching Islam was questioned by one of his students who was brought up in a Muslim family, according to a report by Fox Nation.
The student, a female, told her professor that the way he was conveying Islam to his students didn’t bare resemblance to the way she was taught about her own religion in her upbringing.
Shedinger said in an interview that the questioning of his view on Islam motivated him to completely re-think his whole concept about the religion and the way he was applying it to his teaching.
Shedinger, who is the head of the religious studies department at Luther College in Iowa, also argued that Islam is a better fit for Jesus since it is not a religion but a “social justice movement,” Fox reported.
"I had to rethink what Islam is… I came to the conclusion that it was a social justice movement and I think that’s who Jesus was in the first century so I conclude Jesus is more like a Muslim," he said.
Islam’s Prophet Mohammed is believed to have received revelations that were eventually cited in the Quran at around 622 AD; the date historians, Muslims and Christians believe the birth of Islam to be. Jesus is believed to have lived more than 600 years earlier.
Shedinger’s book also addresses the relationship between Christians and Muslims and how they can “work together to promote social justice in the world.”
Shedinger explained his argument this way:
Got that? According to Shedinger, Islam is a “social justice movement,” not a religion, and since Christ supposedly supported “social justice,” that makes him a Muslim. To quote him, “I came to the conclusion that [Islam] was a social justice movement and I think that’s who Jesus was in the first century so I conclude Jesus is more like a Muslim.”

Video: Christian College Professor: ‘Jesus Was a Muslim’

The head of the religion department at Luther College in Iowa recently argued that Jesus Christ, the central figure of Christianity, was in fact, a Muslim. “‘Was Jesus a Muslim?” asks Prof. Robert F. Shedinger in the beginning of a book he published this year entitled Was Jesus a Muslim? ” I will answer with a very qualified yes.” In a recent interview Shedinger also defended his controversial thesis explaining that a Muslim undergraduate student had sent him on academic odyssey that culminated with him asking himself “Was Jesus a Muslim?”
“Even as a Christian I have to answer yes to that,” said Shedinger, who is the head of the religion departmentat Luther College in Iowa. Shedinger also argued that Islam is a better fit for Jesus since it is not a religion but a “social justice movement.” “I had to rethink what Islam is… I came to the conclusion that it was a social justice movement and I think that’s who Jesus was in the first century so I conclude Jesus is more like a Muslim,” he said. The vast majority of scholars, historians, Muslims, and Christians date the birth of Islam to 622 ADE when the Prophet Muhammad claimed to have received visions that were eventually compiled into the Koran. Jesus, on the other hand, is believed to have existed more than 600 years earlier, at around 0 BCE.
A spokesman for Luther College, a small liberal arts school affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, told Campus Reform on Wednesday that the administration stands fully behind Shedinger’s scholarship. “The administration is very very comfortable with the proposal, with the book, and with what his statements about this situation are,” said Jerry Johnson, the school’s Director of Public Information. ”[T]he ground he is breaking with this book is not anything exactly earthshaking.” source

USA – Christian Professor Says Jesus Was A Muslim
“The Administration Is Very, Very Comfortable”
Muslims consider Jesus (Isa; Arabic: عيسى ʿĪsā) a Messenger of God. Like all prophets in Islam, Jesus is considered a Muslim. Now Robert F. Shedinger, a Christian associate professor of religion at a Lutheran college, who authored a book entitled “Was Jesus a Muslim?” has answered this very question in a TV interview, saying:”Even as a Christian I have to answer yes to that”. And his college is backing him, with spokesman Jerry Johnson saying: “The administration is very, very comfortable with …. what his statements about this situation are.”
Jesus In The Quran
In the Quran, Jesus is called Isa. He is said to be a Messenger of God as well as al-Masih (the Messiah) who came to guide the Children of Israel (banī isrā’īl) with a new scripture, the Injīl or Gospel.
Since Islam requires Muslims to believe in all Messengers of God, belief in Jesus (Isa) is thus a requirement in being a Muslim. Indeed the Quran mentions Jesus 25 times, more times than even Prophet Muhammad. Mary (Maryam), mother of Jesus, is the only female mentioned by name in the Quran, which also describes his birth as resulting from virginal conception through a miraculous decree of God (Allah).
Muslims believe that Jesus will return to earth to defeat Masih ad-Dajjal (the false messiah, or the Antichrist) just prior to the Day of Judgment.
The TV Interview
Robert F. Shedinger was interviewed recently by the In The Community television. Robert F. Shedinger is an associate professor of religion at Luther, a Lutheran college located in Decorah, Iowa which bills itself as an unergraduate liberal arts institution. He teaches Introduction to the Hebrew Bible, The Bible and Imperial Politics, Introduction to Islam, Life After 9/11, Unity and Diversity in Contemporary Islam, and Biodiversity.
Robert F. Shedinger said he was challenged by his Muslim student about his teaching on Islam. That drove him to rethink Islam and all of religion. Robert F. Shedinger then came to the conclusion that Islam is not a religion, but a social justice system. Robert F. Shedinger explains: “I had to rethink what Islam is.”
Robert F. Shedinger said in the interview: “I came to the conclusion that it was a social justice movement and I think that’s who Jesus was in the first century so I conclude Jesus is more like a Muslim.”
Admitting that it would be difficult for many to agree that Jesus was a Muslim, Robert F. Shedinger added: “Even as a Christian I have to answer yes to that. It doesn’t make me uncomfortable any more.”
Explaining why he is not uncomfortable to say that Jesus was a Muslim, Robert F. Shedinger said concerning the question raised in the title of his book “Was Jesus a Muslim?” saying: “There were a lot of scholars out there who are arguing the points I make in the book.”
The Support
Jerry Johnson, school spokesman for Luther, which is affiliated with the Lutheran Church said concerning Robert F. Shedinger and his book: “The ground he is breaking with this book is not anything exactly earthshaking. The administration is very, very comfortable with the proposal, with the book, and with what his statements about this situation are.”
About The Luther College
In its admission mission statement, Luther College said: “We embrace diversity and challenge one another to learn in community, to discern our callings, and to serve with distinction for the common good. As a college of the church, Luther is rooted in an understanding of grace and freedom that emboldens us in worship, study, and service to seek truth, examine our faith, and care for all God’s people.”
Think About It
So was Jesus a Muslim? What does it mean to the Lutheran Church that its affliated college is standing by its associate professor of religion who said Jesus was indeed a Muslim? Should the Lutheran Church rebuke Robert F. Shedinger for this? Should it take the college to task for not dissociating itself with Robert F. Shedinger? Or is the Lutheran Church agreeing that Jesus was a Muslim?
